Miss Gay Maryland America's Newsletter Sue Nami's wave
Selamat…….. In my last newsletter I welcomed everyone to the Miss Gay Maryland America 2010 pageant season. And the season started off with a bang! On Friday August 14th, the first prelim, Miss Glamour Girl was held at Club Hippo! This was my first official duty as Miss Gay Maryland and things could not have gone better. Many thanks to Tom for putting such a great prelim together and congratulations to him for having such a tremendous turn-out. I arrived at the Hippo around noon to set up the dressing room and to prepare myself for the orientation. Starting with the contestant orientation at 3, I could tell there were 4 equally qualified contestants who wanted to win; they were Jada B. Douglas, Dimitria, Victoria Blair and Dannica Lauder. By 4 the judges were being briefed and we were ready to get things rolling. To William, Terry, Bob, Brian and Joanna Blue thank you so much for your time and dedication to the America System and your support to the art of female impersonation. Each girl gave it everything they had and at the end of pageant Dannica Lauder was crowned Miss Glamour Girl 2010 with Victoria Blair being her 1st alternate. Congratulations to both for being the first to qualify to compete for Miss Gay Maryland America 2010 in April. I would like give a big thank you to Roger Dimick, Tatiyanna Voche, Josie Foster and Aunye Diamond who made this pageant so entertaining. On August 08, I was pleased to be a part of the Miss Gay DC America 2009 promoted by Robert York; I had a fantastic time and was honored to be part of your pageant. Congratulations to Jessica Jade, the newly Crowned MGDA2009 and Karyn Thomas 1st alternate I will see you guys in St. Louis! A big congratulations to my sister, Tatiyanna Voche’! On August 28 in Charlotte, NC, she was crowned the Miss Gay Mid East America 2009. You did a fantastic job and I am so happy for you and best of luck to your 1st Alternate China Collins. My competition is building, but I couldn’t be happier with the company that I am in. I have two quotes to leave you with this month: "Failure will never overtake you if your determination to succeed is strong enough." "You will either step forward into growth or you will step back into safety." Sue Nami Miss Gay Maryland America 2009 Selamat!

Miss Gay Maryland America 2009
The month of June was full of Joy, Love, Pride and Compassion.
I started out on June 12th and 13th in
Oklahoma City for the Miss Gay Oklahoma America 2009 Pageant with
Roger Dimick and my sister Tatiyanna Voche as my traveling
companions. We stayed at
the Habanna Inn and let me tell you, what Victoria De Paula said in
her newsletter, was true! It was quite an experience to stay there,
lol. At the pageant, there were 14 contestants competing for the
title of Miss Gay Oklahoma America 2009. It was a tough contest and
by the end of final night, Shantel Mandalay was crowned Miss Gay
Oklahoma America 2009 with Samantha West being the 1st
alternate. It was such a great experience and pleasure to be a part
of this pageant. I was
not only allowed the opportunity to entertain but was able to meet
and help the contestants behind the scenes. And let me tell you
those Oklahoma’s girl can paint down!
Victoria did a phenomenal job as usual and Aaron (Catia Lee
Love) Harvey was a wonderful promoter!
I didn’t have much time to rest because on Sunday June 14th,
I headed over to the Miss Southern Elegance America 2009 Pageant,
also in Oklahoma City.
This was a regional preliminary that is promoted by Mark and Jayme,
who also did a fabulous job.
I would like to congratulate Sally Sparkles for being crowned
Miss Southern Elegance 2009 and to Adrianne Fisher for being 1st
alternate. For the entire trip I would like to thank all of the
members of the Oklahoma America system for their hospitality,
Tatiyanna for helping me with everything that I needed, Roger for
introducing me to everyone in Oklahoma and for teaching me so much
that I needed to know and to Nicole Du Bois for keeping my spirits
up and energy going.
After a long and fun weekend it actually made me a little sad that I
had to come back home.
But I will always have my Baltimore pride!
And speaking of Pride!! June 19th was the start of
Baltimore Gay Pride with a kick off show hosted by Josie Foster at
The Hippo. It was a lot of fun and a good time was had by everyone!
The parade was scheduled for the next day but with the rain
pouring down all morning, I was worried things might not happen.
But someone was watching out for us, I was so happy when the
clouds disappeared and sun came out and we were on our way!
I had such a good time with my loyal dancer’s who made their
way with me down the parade course and helped me to win the best
car! Thank you so much,
you guys mean the world to me! The
streets were crowded with people who came out to celebrate our day
of gay pride. Gay, lesbian, straight, transgendered, it did not
matter at all, we were together and that is what pride is all about
“to be together and stay together in one love”!
On Sunday the 21st we celebrated the 35th
annual Gay Festival at Druid Hill Park. I was honored to be part of
the festival and to be able to perform on that stage! I would like
to send a big thank you to Tia Chambers, the parade and festival
coordinators and the entire group of entertainers that participated
over the weekend; you all did a fantastic job!
Apart from my Miss Gay Maryland duties, on June 28th I
traveled to DC to judge the Color Category at the Miss Dreamgirls
2009 pageant held at Ziegfield’s.
Nine girls competed for this crown and in the end it went to
Kristina Kelly.
Congratulations to you on being crowned the new Miss Dreamgirls
2009.
It is hard to believe that I am already 3 months into my reign, it
all goes so quickly and pageant season is about to start up for me
and then my real work will begin.
I look forward to seeing so many of my friends (old and new
ones) at the prelims. Be
sure to check my calendar for updates and to see where I am going to
be appearing.
I found this quote and thought it summed up how I feel right now:
“Gratitude is a quality similar to electricity: it must be produced
and discharged and used up in order to exist at all.” ~William
Faulkner
I will always be grateful for each day, blessing, gift and friend
that I am given! Thank
you from the bottom of my heart to everyone for making this a
terrific start to my year as Miss Gay Maryland America!
What is something that each of you is grateful for?
Let someone know so all of that positive energy will be put
to good use in the world.
Sue Nami
Miss Gay Maryland America 2009
Selamat…….. First of all, I would like to congratulate Coco
Montrese, the newly crowned
Miss Heart Of I cannot believe, it has been almost 2 months since I was crowned as Miss Gay Maryland America 2009. The time goes by very quickly, but I enjoyed every minute of it. In my last newsletter, I mentioned the importance of learning and listening. 4 years ago before I stepped into the art of female impersonation, my husband Kevin and I went to a cabaret show that was presented by Josie Foster and Sabrina White. That night, Roger Dimick sat at the table with us. I told him I would like to perform at the Hippo one time only. Then he came up with the name no. 14 with the egg roll for me. That night I was introduced to Josie and Sabrina. They were willing to help me to get ready to perform. It took 3 months for me to prepare before the show. Finally, it turned out very well. From that one time experience, I stand changed forever as Miss Gay Maryland America 2009. Through the 4 years, I have been working very closely with my great friend Kevin Clopton, who has guided me into the reality of being a great entertainer and a great competitor. Since I won my title, I’ve been performing in so
many different places: Are you all ready for the big day of our community? Baltimore Pride is June 20 and June 21. This great event is for all of us, so that we all gather together to celebrate our community through support, love, and compassion. Pride community meetings are open for everyone, and are held at the GLCCB every Tuesday at 7pm I have been attending these meetings, and I am so proud for all the volunteers, the board of directors, and the GLCCB. Also, thanks to the pride coordinator, Paul Liller, for your dedication and your hard work for the community. I am hoping that everyone will have a great summer and enjoyed the pride celebration. “Happy Pride” With Love, Sue Nami

Jonathan Jackson It takes a true actor to cross all lines and explore every opportunity to become the consummate performer. For Maryland-born actor Jonathan Jackson, he has reached that goal. The versatile thespian is not only known on local and regional stages for his phenomenal talent, but is also widely known in the gay community on the nationwide level as Tatiyanna Voche’, the former Miss Gay Maryland America who recently turned over the prestigious crown and title last month at the Miss Gay Maryland America Pageant held at Club Hippo last. As both a member of the theater and female impersonation communities, Jackson has not only united people, but erased many of the stereotypes and misconceptions about the art of female impersonation. “I probably think the biggest misconception about female impersonation is that I want to live my life as a woman,” says Jackson. “That’s not the case. For me, she’s a big part of me, but it’s a character that I play. People generally think that you want to get breasts or you want to have a sex change and live your life as a woman, but that’s not the case. It’s an illusion.” Before Jackson created the illusion of Tatiyanna Voche’ almost three years ago, he made his mark in the theater community as an actor. He performed at various venues on the East Coast including the critically-acclaimed and award-winning Toby’s Dinner Theatre and the West End Dinner Theatre. The accomplished performer has appeared in numerous productions including Aida, Mame, Grease, Footloose, George M!, Miss Saigon, Crazy for You, Beauty and the Beast, Fiddler on the Roof, La Cage aux Folles, Little Shop of Horrors and Thoroughly Modern Millie. Born and raised in Harve de Grace, Maryland, the 26-year-old Jackson began his artistic career not as an actor, but as a musician. While in high school, he was thrust into the school’s music department where he studied the saxophone. It was during his senior year that he discovered musical theater. “In my senior year, we did Grease,” says Jackson. “I got Danny Zuko. It kind of lit a fire in me. It was really what I wanted to do. I was pushed to play the saxophone in high school, so I started to resent it a little bit.” After graduating from high school, Jackson was accepted at Towson University where he would later attend and change his major from music to theater. His sudden career change raised eyebrows in the Jackson household. “At first, my parents were very reluctant of having me actually go into musical theater,” explains Jackson. “They wanted me to have something to fall back on. They were very positive once they saw it, that it made me happy and that I could support myself by doing theater.” While in college, Jackson met theater director Toby Orenstein of Toby’s Dinner Theatre who was impressed with the aspiring young actor and his dream to establish a career in musical theater. That critical meeting led to a seven year professional relationship that continues to this day. “Toby is probably the first to take a chance on a young kid who was still in college and come to her theater,” says Jackson. “She is pretty much an inspiration to me. I saw how much passion that she had for [theater].” Working with Orenstein led to Jackson’s professional involvement with director Mark Minnick, who works for Phoenix Tours and Virginia’s West End Dinner Theatre. “He’s an inspiration,” adds Jackson. “It’s nice to see that someone can follow their dreams and do what they like to do and make a living out of it.” Unlike most actors who dream of performing on the Great White Way, Jackson is content continuing his career with Toby’s Dinner Theatre where the opportunities are endless. “When I started at Toby’s, yes, my dream was to keep going and go other places,” explains Jackson, “ but slowly your life settles and you become happy. [Toby] does the shows that you want to do that most other places don’t do. So, it’s almost like you’re growing when she’s growing. It’s that intense feeling. I was always happy there and content.”
Jonathan Jackson, photo by Steve Weiner Three years ago, on a whim, Jackson decided to expand his career as a performer by taking on the art of female impersonation. It occurred on a Halloween night immediately after a rehearsal at Toby’s Dinner Theatre, where the young actor decided to dress in drag and celebrate the night at Club Hippo. It was during the entertainment club’s annual Halloween contest that the young actor caught the eye of Hippo bartender Jason Kueberth, who recognized a drag queen in the making. “I already knew Jonathan from doing theater,” says Kueberth, who has worked with dozens of Miss Maryland contestants in various capacities. “I could tell by his makeup that he was going in the right direction and what he was doing. I knew that he was talented from seeing him on stage. I was like, ‘you need to do drag, don’t you?’ He was like, ‘yea.’ So at that point he was like, ‘OK, you can help.’” During that same night, Kueberth introduced Jackson to Joseph Diffenbaugh, better known in the gay community as Josie Lee Foster. It was an introduction that would change Jackson’s life forever. “He had a lot of interest in doing female impersonation,” says Diffenbaugh. “He was really gun-ho even when I took him under my wing and explained to him what female impersonation was about and what he needed to do. I told him that I could guide him to the right people to make outfits, the right people to paint him and where to get wigs and things like that. But after you helped him for the first couple of shows, he was on his own. He took it way beyond what we taught him.” It came as no surprise when Jackson, in the illusion of Tatiyanna Voche’, was crowned Miss Gay Maryland America 2008 after only two years of competing in the Maryland pageantry system. “I wasn’t surprised,” says Diffenbaugh of Jackson’s win. “I knew because he really wanted the Miss Maryland title and he really wanted to be able to perform….. I was really happy for him that he took it that far that fast.” “I always tease him about how I won the crown too, as a joke,” laughs Kueberth, who helped nudge the impressive performer into the drag community. “But it still takes the person to get out there and do it.” When talking with Roger Dimick, Club Hippo General Manager and the promoter of the Miss Gay Maryland America Pageant about the reign of Tatiyanna Voche’ he exudes a warm glow, a gentle smile and tearful eyes. “Before Tatiyanna won, I didn’t know Jonathan,” explains Dimick. “He was a freshly new 23-year-old female impersonator who by three or four months into his reign, I got to know and got to watch both Tatiyanna and Jonathan grow. It’s just been amazing. Sometimes just thinking about how much he has come in that one year just makes me cry because he’s such a good kid.” Sunday, April 19, 2009 was an emotional night for Jackson, who was about to hand over his title and crown to a new Miss Gay Maryland America contestant. That night at Club Hippo, Jackson stunned the entire audience with a thrilling performance as Velma Kelly in a scene from the musical Chicago. The stunned audience members were on their feet with thunderous applause and gave the talented performer a standing ovation, a first in the 25 year history of the Miss Gay Maryland America Pageant system. The audience’s reaction bought the humble young performer to tears. The icing on the cake that night was the presence of Jackson’s mother. It was the first time that his mother saw her son perform as a woman. “My mother didn’t really come around with the whole female impersonation thing until Miss Maryland,” explains Jackson. “It was the first time she’s ever seen me perform. It definitely changed the way she views it and what she thought it was.”
Jonathan Jackson, photo by Steve Weiner Now that Jackson has given up his crown, he has turned his attention to becoming Miss Gay America. It is a dream that he will surely realize in the near future. “Oh, yes, Tatiyanna will be crowned Miss America,” says Roger Dimick. “I don’t know when, but sometimes it just depends on his determination and his drive.” As Tatiyanna Voche’, Jackson can be found at Club Hippo on the 3rd Friday of every month where he will continue to entertain and bring smiles to hundreds of individuals with his amazing talents. “I’m someone that wants to work hard and wants to entertain,” says Jackson. “I’m not going anywhere. Nothing is going to change.” For more information on Tatiyanna Voche’, go to www.tatiyannavoche.com.

A Letter of Farewell
From
Walt Disney wasn’t lying when he said “A Dream is a wish your heart
makes.” Ever since I
started my career of being a female impersonator, being Miss Gay
Maryland was truly a dream.
I can’t believe that one year ago that dream came true and
now it’s coming to an end.
After I was crowned it took a good couple of weeks for it to
really sit in. The MC’s
would announce “
grow if we let them, and we help them in return.
I know I’m who I am
today because I knew you.” ~ Wicked

July 2008 I would like to start this month’s edition of Voche’s Voice with a quote; “Take me as I am.” It’s from a musical that I was listening to and I realized how powerful of a statement it is and is a phrase we should all live by everyday. Each one of us is a unique individual and that’s what makes the field of female impersonation so special. June was a fabulous month! We started out the month with the Female Impersonation Awards which was a great night. Congrats to all the girls who were nominated and the ones that won. I then traveled to DE for Miss Gay Mid Atlantic. Congrats to Zippy on a great pageant and thank you for having me be apart of your pageant. Congratulations to Miss D. Meaner who captured the title of Miss Gay Mid Atlantic and 1st Alternate Sierra Leone. I hope everyone had a fabulous pride! Pride was the weekend of the 21st and after a week of the weather being cool it decided to be hot all weekend for pride. We started out pride weekend with DuWanna Moore’s kickoff show including out of town guest China Collins. It was great to have her in town and she did an amazing job. Saturday was the parade, block party and then a fabulous night of dancing at the Hippo. All in all pride was fabulous as always. Deerpark Lodge held the annual Positive Influence Benefit on the 27th of June, it was an amazing evening and I was thrilled to be involved. Congrats to Nicole James putting together such a wonderful evening. It’s nice to know and see how much people care about doing things to help their community. The night was filled with silent auctions, door prizes, and fabulous entertainment. Each entertainer donated their tips to help raise money. The grand total of money raised was around $8000.00. July looks to be a busy month as well. First off I would like to wish everyone a Happy Fouth of July! We start out this month with Miss Gay DC America on July 6th. Then a week later is the Miss PA Pageant on the 13th and 14th. I’d like to wish Robert, Blake, and Michele Sterling the best of luck on a successful pageant. I’m very excited to be representing Maryland at both pageants. Need a mid week break? Come out to bingo every Wednesday as I will be selling Tatiyanna’s Loser Bingo to help raise money for Miss America. Also this month I’ll be traveling to Deerpark Lodge on the 4th, Apex with Kristina Kelly on the 5th, and Club Rehab on the 19th. This month at the Hippo come out as Josie Foster presents a Fourth of July show on the 4th, Josie Foster and Sabrina White present the Hippo Cabaret on the 11th, DuWanna Moore’s show on the 18, and myself and Sue Nami present Divapalooza on the 25th. I can’t believe our first prelim to Miss Gay Maryland 2009 is a month away. Miss Glamour Girl is on August 1st at the Hippo. Miss Chaka Khanvict will be giving up the title with a circus theme. I’m very excited to start the year off with a bang. So please bring all your friends out to support Chaka Khanvict and the girls who will be competing for Miss Glamour Girl 2009. Any girls who may be interested in running, have questions, or need anything please feel free to contact me at anytime. Applications for Miss Glamour Girl will be available at the bar within the next week. Also we are having a promoters meeting on July 21st at 7:30. This meeting will be held at Johanna Blue’s House. If you need directions please call me and I’ll e-mail them to you. Promoters meetings are open to any contestants interested in the Miss Gay Maryland system so please feel free to attend. As always I’d like to take a moment to thank a few people that have really helped me this past month. A big thank you to Jimmy B. for always lending a helping hand and for traveling with me to Miss Mid Atlantic as my dresser. Kate Voche’ for assisting me at pride, Vanity Starr & David for the fabulous pride costume, and last but not least everyone else for the kind words of encouragement and support. It’s still overwhelming to see how much love and support the state of Maryland has. I hope everyone has a fabulous Fourth of July and to see each and every one of you throughout the month of July!

Congratulations to Chantel Reshae and Kristina Kelly, we will have a fabulous time at Miss Gay America. June looks to be an exciting month, it’s pride month. You have not played bingo until you play it Roger Dimick style every Wednesday at the Hippo. I would like to end this month’s edition by wishing my dear friend Reba the best of luck on Miss Gay Tri States, Zippy on Miss Mid Atlantic, and Catia Lee Love on Miss Gay Oklahoma. I would also like to extend a big thank you to a few people. I would like to thank Charity Saude, due to the fact that Miss Maryland doesn’t know how to change a tire I had a sister who did it for me at 3 in the morning. Veronica Wynters for making me a beautiful dress. Brooke Lane, for helping me to get dressed the past month. Matt my promoter; words are endless when I think of what I would do without you. Thank you so much for everything that you do and for being up here to support me. The list could go on but I would like to say thank you to everyone for the continuing love and support it really is a true honor to be called Miss Gay Maryland. Tits

May 2008 It has been almost 2 weeks since I was crowned Miss Gay Maryland 2008 and it is still sinking in. It was an amazing weekend and one that I will never forget for the rest of my life. I have to start out by saying what a fabulous job the other nine contestants did. Being one of the contestants and getting to share a stage with all nine of the other girls was truly an honor. Each and every girl really was going after the crown all weekend long. Miss Maryland truly is a pageant that people want to come see and look forward to what the Maryland girls are going to do each year. I believe Sue Nami and myself will represent Maryland extremely well at Miss Gay America in October. Something else that I have noticed is what an amazing community we have here in Maryland. We are extremely lucky to have such a great support system and a community who believes and appreciates the art of female impersonation. I would like to thank Chuck Bowers, Roger Dimick, and the entire staff of the Hippo for one of the smoothest running pageants I have ever been apart of or attended. It really helps the contestants focus and relax when everything is run as smoothly as Miss Maryland was this year. I can’t thank everyone enough for all the phone calls, text messages, e-mails, etc wishing me luck on a great year and the warmest welcome possible into the Miss Gay Maryland family. Every phone call and message that I received really meant a lot to me and I hope that every Miss Maryland after me will feel the way that I felt the week I won and still feel right now. I have to thank a few people that helped me achieve the title of Miss Gay Maryland, because without a fabulous support system, great friends, and people that truly believe in you, nothing is possible. I would like to again thank, Chuck Bowers, Roger Dimick, and the entire staff of the Hippo, Gilbert Morrisette, Jayson Queberth, Matt Flinchem, Josie Foster, Sabrina White, Andora TeTee, Truly Faboo, Jimmy, Jess, the Voche’ Dancers, Ricky Davis, Ronnie Strevig, Greg Lattin, Norm, Farrell, Phillip and Chris, Sha Na Nay Ronnie, Randy, Reba from Kansas City; promoter of Miss Gay Tri States America, all the former MGM’s, Johanna Blue, Vanity, Tom Morriston, and last but not least my father; who means the world to me and was here all weekend supporting me. If I forgot anyone, I truly am sorry everyone that helped me all weekend long could make this list go on forever. I would also like to thank a very special person and that is Mikaila Kay, Miss Gay America. She was an amazing help to each and every contestant. Not only did she assist anyone in every way possible but she also represented the Miss Gay America system beautifully. I hope that my reign as Miss Gay Maryland is everything I dreamed it would be. And I hope to make the community as happy as they were the night I won when I give up the title a year from now. I think Maryland is a state who constantly raises the bar of expectation and I am going to strive to raise it even higher in the next year. My phone is always on and the door is always open. Thank you all so much again for an amazing welcome into the Miss Gay Maryland Family. P.S. Voche’s Voice will be a monthly newsletter so please continue to read and check our website for information.
